Overview
ESOTERIC Grandioso E1 Balanced Phonostage Preamplifier
A Flagship Phono Stage for the Vinyl Renaissance
The ESOTERIC Grandioso E1 is a reference-level phono stage designed to reveal the full potential of high-performance analog playback. Developed as the natural companion to the Grandioso T1 turntable, the E1 introduces ESOTERIC’s unique MC Balanced Current Input, dedicated optical-cartridge support, fully balanced dual-mono amplification, advanced equalization control, and a separate power-supply chassis.
Its goal is simple but ambitious: extract more musical energy, lower noise, and greater realism from vinyl playback while offering the flexibility required by serious analog systems.

MC Balanced Current Input
The Grandioso E1 includes three balanced XLR inputs specifically designed for moving-coil cartridges.
Instead of converting the cartridge’s output current into a very small voltage through a conventional load resistor, the E1 accepts the MC cartridge signal directly as current. This architecture is designed to preserve more of the cartridge’s original energy while reducing sensitivity to impedance matching and minimizing signal loss.
Dedicated Optical Cartridge Input
The E1 also includes a dedicated RCA input for optical cartridges.
Because optical cartridges require fundamentally different amplification and equalization from MM and MC designs, ESOTERIC provides a dedicated fully balanced, dual-mono optical phono stage with its own power supply and low-feedback regulation.

MM & High-Output MC Support
A separate RCA input accommodates MM, high-output MC, and transformer-coupled MC cartridges.
Load impedance and capacitance can be adjusted to match the cartridge, while the incoming signal is immediately converted to balanced operation and processed through the E1’s fully discrete phono stage.
Fully Balanced, Dual-Mono Discrete Architecture
The E1’s main phono stage uses a fully balanced, dual-mono, fully discrete two-stage variable EQ/gain amplifier.
A CR-type equalization circuit is used for natural tonal reproduction, while adjustable gain allows the phono stage to accommodate cartridges with different output levels.
Six EQ Curves + Four Custom Presets
The Grandioso E1 provides exceptional flexibility for vinyl collections from different eras and labels.
Six standard EQ curves are available:
- RIAA
- Columbia
- Decca
- NAB
- Teldec
- AES
In addition, four custom EQ presets can be created by independently adjusting Low Limit, Turnover, and Roll-Off parameters.
Advanced Vinyl Playback Functions
The E1 includes several useful tools for serious analog playback:
- MC cartridge demagnetization
- Subsonic filter for warped records
- Mono mode for monaural recordings
The demagnetization function can be used during playback to demagnetize the iron core of an MC cartridge or step-up transformer.
Esoteric-HCLD Output Stage
Following technology used in the Grandioso C1X, the E1 incorporates ESOTERIC’s HCLD High Current Line Driver.
The output stage achieves a very high 2,000 V/μs slew rate, providing fast, powerful signal transmission from the phono stage to the connected preamplifier.
ES-Link Analog
The Grandioso E1 provides both RCA and XLR outputs, with the XLR output switchable to ES-Link Analog.
ES-Link Analog is ESOTERIC’s proprietary current-transmission method and is designed to reduce the effect of interconnect impedance while transmitting substantially more current than conventional voltage-based connections.
Dual-Chassis Construction
The E1 separates the sensitive phono-stage circuitry from the power supply, control electronics, and display system.
This two-chassis architecture helps isolate the low-level cartridge signal from vibration, electromagnetic interference, and digital-control noise.
Four Independent Power Supplies
The dedicated power/control chassis incorporates four independent power-supply systems.
The MC/MM phono stage uses separate left and right transformers and rectifiers, while the optical phono section and control circuitry each receive their own dedicated power supplies.

Reference Chassis Construction
Heavy aluminum blocks, a semi-floating top panel, multi-layer steel construction, and ESOTERIC’s patented Pinpoint isolation feet are used to control vibration and reduce electrical and mechanical interaction between circuit sections.
