The Esoteric Grandioso E1 is a flagship reference phono preamplifier engineered to extract the highest level of musical information from analog vinyl recordings. Featuring a sophisticated two-chassis design, fully balanced dual-mono amplification, proprietary moving-coil balanced current inputs and dedicated optical cartridge circuitry, the Grandioso E1 represents Esoteric's most advanced approach to analog signal reproduction.

Designed to accommodate moving-coil (MC), moving-magnet (MM) and optical phono cartridges, the E1 combines exceptional cartridge flexibility with precision equalization and extensive gain adjustment.

Its dedicated power supply and control chassis isolates sensitive audio circuitry from potential sources of electrical noise and mechanical vibration, while the fully discrete signal path maintains the integrity of delicate phono-level signals.

For serious vinyl collectors, the Grandioso E1 also provides six historical equalization curves and four customizable EQ presets, allowing accurate playback of recordings produced under different mastering standards.

Proprietary MC Balanced Current Inputs

The Grandioso E1 features three pairs of balanced XLR current inputs specifically engineered for compatible moving-coil cartridges.

Conventional phono preamplifiers typically convert the cartridge's generated current into a voltage through an input load resistor. Esoteric's balanced current input architecture instead receives the current signal directly, minimizing conversion losses at the input stage.

This approach reduces the need for conventional cartridge load-resistance matching on the dedicated current inputs and is designed to preserve the dynamic and tonal characteristics of the cartridge.

The three balanced current inputs allow multiple compatible tonearms or turntables to remain connected.

Dedicated Optical Cartridge Preamplifier

The Grandioso E1 incorporates a separate, fully balanced dual-mono phono stage specifically designed for optical cartridges.

Unlike conventional magnetic cartridges, optical designs detect stylus movement using an internal light source and optical sensor. Their electrical output and equalization requirements differ substantially from those of MM and MC cartridges.

Esoteric provides a dedicated RCA optical cartridge input with its own amplification and equalization architecture.

This allows owners of compatible optical cartridge systems to integrate them directly into a reference Grandioso analog system without requiring a separate optical phono equalizer.

Fully Balanced Dual-Mono Discrete Amplification

The E1 uses fully balanced, dual-mono, discrete amplifier circuitry for its primary MM/MC signal path.

A sophisticated two-stage architecture combines variable equalization and gain amplification, with carefully selected components and dedicated circuitry for each channel.

The design emphasizes low noise, precise channel separation and accurate reproduction of the extremely small electrical signals produced by phono cartridges.

A separate balanced optical phono stage maintains the same emphasis on channel isolation and signal integrity.

Six Equalization Curves and Four Custom Presets

Not every historical vinyl recording was mastered using the modern RIAA equalization standard.

The Grandioso E1 provides six selectable equalization curves:

• RIAA

• Columbia

• Decca

• NAB

• Teldec

• AES

Four additional user-programmable presets allow detailed adjustment of turnover frequency, low-frequency behavior and high-frequency roll-off.

This capability is especially valuable for collectors of early LP pressings, archival recordings and records manufactured before widespread RIAA standardization.

Equalization settings can be controlled from the front panel or included remote.

Precision Cartridge Loading and Gain Adjustment

The Grandioso E1 offers extensive adjustment to accommodate different cartridge designs and output levels.

For its conventional RCA voltage input, selectable MC loading includes 10, 50, 100, 200 and 560 ohms.

MM cartridges use a 47kΩ load with selectable capacitance of 100, 220 or 320pF.

Gain can also be adjusted to accommodate differences in cartridge output:

Balanced MC current input: -9dB to 0dB in 3dB steps.

MM/MC voltage input: -6dB to +4dB in 2dB steps.

These settings provide substantial flexibility for reference cartridge matching.

Separate Power Supply and Control Chassis

The Grandioso E1 uses two substantial aluminum enclosures:

Main Phono Preamplifier Chassis: Houses the sensitive analog amplification and equalization circuits.

Power Supply and Control Chassis: Contains the dedicated power supply, control electronics and display functions.

Separating these functions helps protect low-level cartridge signals from interference associated with power conversion, digital control circuitry and mechanical vibration.

The two components are connected using dedicated DC power cables supplied with the system.

Esoteric-HCLD Output Buffer and ES-LINK Analog

The Grandioso E1 incorporates Esoteric's proprietary HCLD high-current line driver output buffer circuitry.

Featuring a specified 2,000V/µs slew rate, this architecture is engineered for rapid signal response and stable transmission to compatible preamplifiers.

The balanced XLR outputs can also be configured for ES-LINK Analog, Esoteric's proprietary current-transmission interface for compatible components.

A conventional RCA output is provided for broader system compatibility.

Advanced Vinyl Playback Functions

The Grandioso E1 includes several features intended for serious analog playback systems.

MC Cartridge Demagnetization: A selectable function designed to demagnetize the iron core of compatible moving-coil cartridges.

Subsonic Filter: A 16Hz filter with a 6dB/octave slope helps reduce unwanted low-frequency energy associated with warped records.

Mono Mode: Supports playback of monaural recordings.

Remote Operation: The included RC-1343 remote provides convenient access to operating and equalization functions.
