The EMM Labs DV2i combines reference-level digital-to-analog conversion, high-resolution network streaming and precision volume control in a single component. Developed by Ed Meitner and manufactured in Canada, it brings together proprietary 16xDSD conversion, a discrete Class A analog output stage and EMM Labs' next-generation VControl system.

Building on the DA2i platform, the DV2i adds variable-volume analog outputs, allowing it to connect directly to a compatible power amplifier without requiring a separate analog preamplifier for digital playback. Its integrated network streamer provides access to major streaming platforms, while a comprehensive selection of digital inputs accommodates external music servers, CD/SACD transports and other digital sources.

With MDAC2 conversion, MDAT2 signal processing, MFAST frequency acquisition and MCLK3 asynchronous clocking, the DV2i is designed to serve as the digital front end of a reference two-channel audio system.

MDAC2: Proprietary 16xDSD Conversion

At the heart of the DV2i are EMM Labs' proprietary MDAC2 dual-differential discrete digital-to-analog converters.

Operating at 16xDSD, equivalent to DSD1024, this architecture is developed in-house rather than built around a conventional third-party DAC chipset. It is paired with a redesigned Class A analog output stage to reproduce the fine detail, dynamic contrasts and spatial information contained in digital recordings.

By designing the conversion architecture and analog output stage together, EMM Labs maintains control over the complete digital-to-analog signal path.

VControl: Precision Volume Without Re-Quantization

The DV2i's defining advantage over the DA2i is its integrated VControl volume system.

This proprietary technology provides variable output levels while preserving the integrity of the digital signal without re-quantization. It is designed to maintain resolution across a wide attenuation range, allowing the DV2i to function as both a DAC and a digital-source preamplifier.

For a system built entirely around digital playback, the DV2i can feed a compatible stereo power amplifier or pair of monoblock amplifiers directly. This can eliminate the need for a separate preamplifier, simplifying the signal path and reducing the number of components in the system.

Selectable high and low output-gain settings provide additional flexibility when matching the DV2i to different amplifier input sensitivities.

Integrated High-Resolution Network Streaming

The DV2i incorporates a dedicated network streaming platform with its own isolated power supply.

It supports Roon, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, Qobuz, Deezer, V-Tuner internet radio and DLNA/UPnP playback. Compatible USB and network sources can deliver high-resolution formats including double-rate DSD and DXD at 352.8kHz or 384kHz.

Integrating streaming directly into the DAC removes the need for a separate network transport in many systems. The dedicated isolation of its network circuitry is intended to prevent electrical interference from compromising the sensitive conversion and analog output stages.

MDAT2 Digital Processing and MCLK3 Clocking

The DV2i uses three proprietary EMM Labs technologies to manage incoming digital audio.

MDAT2, the latest generation of Meitner Digital Audio Translator processing, prepares incoming digital signals for the 16xDSD conversion architecture.

MFAST provides rapid frequency acquisition and helps isolate the conversion process from timing irregularities introduced by external digital sources. MCLK3, EMM Labs' asynchronous master clock, supplies the precision timing reference for digital-to-analog conversion.

Together, these systems are engineered to minimize source-related jitter and maintain consistent digital performance across the DV2i's range of inputs.

Digital Inputs for Streaming and Physical Media

The DV2i offers a comprehensive range of digital connections, allowing it to act as the central digital source component in a high-end stereo system.

Its AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF and TOSLINK inputs accommodate compatible digital transports and playback equipment. USB audio provides a connection for computer-based music playback, while Ethernet enables the integrated network streamer.

A proprietary EMM Optilink input allows the DV2i to connect to compatible EMM Labs CD/SACD transports, providing an integrated solution for collectors who want both physical media and high-resolution streaming.

Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs allow the DV2i to be integrated with a wide selection of high-end amplifiers.

Isolated Power Supply and Class A Analog Stage

The DV2i incorporates EMM Labs' proprietary high-isolation resonant-mode power supply, designed to provide stable power to its digital and analog circuitry.

Its USB and network interfaces feature custom power isolation and hardware galvanic isolation, helping prevent electrical noise from connected equipment from entering the conversion circuitry.

A newly designed Class A analog output stage complements the discrete DAC architecture. Aerospace-grade ceramic circuit boards, precision-machined aluminum metalwork and an updated front-panel display complete the design.
