EMM Labs DA2i – Flagship 16xDSD DAC with Integrated Network Streaming

The EMM Labs DA2i combines flagship digital-to-analog conversion and high-resolution network streaming in a single reference-grade component. Built around EMM Labs' proprietary MDAC2 dual-differential discrete converters, it employs 16xDSD (DSD1024) conversion, next-generation MDAT2 signal processing and a redesigned Class A analog output stage.

Designed and manufactured in Canada, the DA2i incorporates an isolated network streaming system, MFAST frequency acquisition and MCLK3 asynchronous clocking. Together, these technologies are engineered to preserve musical detail, timing and spatial information while minimizing the effects of digital jitter and electrical interference.

With support for Roon, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Spotify Connect and multiple digital inputs, the DA2i can serve as the digital source at the heart of an ambitious high-end stereo system.

Proprietary MDAC2 Dual-Differential Conversion

At the heart of the DA2i is EMM Labs' next-generation MDAC2 conversion architecture. Rather than relying on a conventional off-the-shelf DAC chipset, EMM Labs uses its own discrete dual-differential converter design.

The architecture operates at 16xDSD, equivalent to DSD1024, and is paired with a newly developed Class A analog output stage. The design is intended to preserve low-level information, dynamic contrasts and spatial detail as the digital signal is converted into analog audio.

For a reference two-channel system, this architecture provides a dedicated conversion platform developed around EMM Labs' own digital processing and clocking technologies.

MDAT2 Digital Signal Processing

The DA2i incorporates the latest generation of Meitner Digital Audio Translator technology, MDAT2.

This proprietary DSP system processes incoming digital audio in real time before conversion through the MDAC2 architecture. By developing its digital processing and converter stages together, EMM Labs maintains control over the signal path rather than depending on the processing built into a third-party DAC chip.

The result is an integrated digital architecture designed to preserve the timing, dynamics and harmonic structure of high-resolution recordings. 

MFAST and MCLK3 Clocking

Digital timing is a central part of the DA2i's design. Two proprietary EMM Labs technologies work together to manage incoming digital signals.

MFAST, the company's frequency acquisition system, rapidly acquires incoming digital audio signals and helps isolate the conversion process from source-related jitter. MCLK3, EMM Labs' latest asynchronous clocking system, provides the timing reference for the DAC.

Together, these technologies are designed to reduce the influence of timing irregularities from connected transports, computers and other digital sources. 

Integrated High-Resolution Network Streaming

The DA2i includes a built-in network streamer, allowing music to be played directly through the component without requiring a separate external network transport.

Its streaming platform supports Roon, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Deezer, V-Tuner internet radio and DLNA/UPnP playback. USB audio and network streaming support high-resolution formats including double-rate DSD, DXD and MQA.

The network subsystem has its own isolated power supply, while both the network and USB interfaces incorporate galvanic isolation. These measures are intended to limit the transfer of electrical noise from connected digital equipment into the DAC's sensitive audio circuitry.

Digital Connectivity for a Reference Audio System

In addition to integrated streaming, the DA2i offers a comprehensive selection of digital inputs.

AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF and TOSLINK connections accommodate compatible CD transports and other digital audio components. USB audio provides a direct connection for computer-based playback, while the proprietary EMM Optilink connection supports compatible EMM Labs CD/SACD transports.

The DA2i provides balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog outputs, with selectable high and low output levels. This flexibility allows it to be matched to different preamplifiers and integrated amplifiers without requiring a separate digital source component.

Dedicated Power Isolation and Class A Output Stage

The DA2i employs EMM Labs' proprietary high-isolation resonant-mode power supply, alongside dedicated isolation for its USB and network interfaces.

The Class A analog output stage is designed to complement the discrete converter architecture, while aerospace-grade ceramic circuit boards provide a specialized foundation for the internal electronics.

A precision-machined aluminum chassis completes the design. The DA2i is available in silver with a black front insert or an all-black finish, allowing it to integrate with a range of reference audio systems.
