Overview
Burmester BX100 Floorstanding Loudspeakers
Complimentary White Glove Delivery • Travel Reimbursement*
The Burmester BX100 Loudspeakers represent a new generation of Burmester reference loudspeaker engineering, combining a sophisticated 4-way bass-reflex architecture with a freestanding Air Motion Transformer, dedicated midrange and mid-bass drivers, and two massive 260 mm side-mounted woofers. The result is a substantial full-range loudspeaker engineered for high dynamic capability, precise dispersion and exceptional control.
At the heart of the BX100 is one of its most visually and technically distinctive features: an AMT tweeter mounted without a conventional surrounding baffle. Below and above it, dedicated 170 mm polypropylene and carbon-fiber drivers handle the midrange and mid-bass, while two 260 mm woofers provide the foundation of the system.
The BX100 combines this driver architecture with 89 dB sensitivity, a 3-ohm nominal impedance, 350-watt nominal power handling and a 37 Hz to 24 kHz ±3 dB frequency response. At up to 141 kg, or approximately 311 lb, per loudspeaker, its physical construction is every bit as serious as its acoustic design.
4-Way Bass-Reflex Architecture
The BX100 is a true 4-way floorstanding loudspeaker.
Its driver system consists of:
Freestanding Air Motion Transformer tweeter
170 mm polypropylene/carbon-fiber midrange driver
170 mm polypropylene/carbon-fiber mid-bass driver
2 × 260 mm glass-fiber/polyester sandwich woofers
The crossover divides the system at 130 Hz, 240 Hz and 2.2 kHz, allowing each driver to operate within a deliberately defined portion of the frequency spectrum.
This architecture separates deep bass, upper bass, midrange and treble reproduction rather than requiring fewer drivers to cover exceptionally broad frequency ranges.
Freestanding Air Motion Transformer
The BX100's Air Motion Transformer is mounted without a traditional surrounding baffle, creating one of the loudspeaker's defining visual and acoustic elements.
Removing the conventional baffle structure around the tweeter reduces nearby surfaces that can interact with high-frequency dispersion.
The open architecture is designed to provide exceptionally broad horizontal dispersion, extending the useful listening area beyond a narrowly defined central position.
Rather than hiding the tweeter within the cabinet, Burmester makes the AMT a central structural and visual element of the BX100.
Carbon-Fiber and Polypropylene Midrange
The dedicated 170 mm midrange driver uses a diaphragm constructed from polypropylene reinforced with randomly distributed carbon fibers.
This composite approach is designed to combine low moving mass with rigidity and internal damping.
Low mass allows the diaphragm to respond rapidly to changes in the signal, while the carbon reinforcement increases stiffness. The material's internal damping helps control unwanted resonances as frequency increases.
The BX100 uses the same fundamental diaphragm technology for its dedicated mid-bass driver, allowing Burmester to maintain consistent material behavior across these adjacent frequency ranges.
Dedicated 170 mm Mid-Bass Driver
A second 170 mm polypropylene and carbon-fiber driver is dedicated specifically to the mid-bass region.
This creates an important transition between the large side-mounted woofers and the dedicated midrange driver.
Rather than asking the midrange unit to simultaneously reproduce voices, instruments and substantial low-frequency energy, Burmester divides these responsibilities among specialized transducers.
The 130 Hz and 240 Hz crossover points illustrate how deliberately the BX100 separates deep bass from mid-bass and the primary midrange.
Dual 260 mm Side-Mounted Woofers
Bass reproduction is handled by two 260 mm, approximately 10.3-inch, woofers.
Their sandwich diaphragms combine glass fiber and polyester fabric, creating a structure engineered for high rigidity and controlled mechanical behavior.
Using two large woofers gives the BX100 substantial radiating area while their side-mounted installation allows Burmester to maintain a relatively narrow 290 mm front profile.
The woofers are integrated into the BX100's bass-reflex enclosure and contribute to a published low-frequency extension of 37 Hz at ±3 dB.
Adjustable Sound Characteristics
The BX100 provides adjustable frequency-response characteristics so the loudspeaker can be optimized around the room and system.
Burmester uses high-quality gold-plated copper bridges to provide the adjustment.
This gives the BX100 another level of installation flexibility, allowing its response to be tailored according to room acoustics, loudspeaker placement and system requirements rather than relying on a single fixed configuration.
For a loudspeaker of this scale, that adjustability is particularly valuable because the room becomes an inseparable part of the final acoustic system.
Vibration-Controlled Cabinet Architecture
The BX100's enclosure was engineered specifically to minimize unwanted vibration and resonance.
Internal bracing reinforces the cabinet structure, while particular attention is paid to the mechanical interface between the drivers and enclosure.
The freestanding AMT area required an especially sophisticated structural solution because the absence of a conventional baffle removes material that would ordinarily contribute to cabinet rigidity.
Burmester therefore reinforces the surrounding enclosure and mechanically couples the driver structures under substantial pre-tension to create a stable connection.
The goal is to prevent the cabinet from becoming an uncontrolled secondary sound source while giving the drivers a mechanically stable platform from which to operate.
3-Ohm Load and Serious Amplification
The BX100 has a nominal impedance of 3 ohms, making amplifier selection particularly important.
Its sensitivity is a relatively strong 89 dB at 2.83V/1m, but sensitivity alone does not describe the electrical demands placed on the amplifier.
The 3-ohm nominal load means the amplifier must be capable of supplying substantial current while maintaining stability as the loudspeaker's impedance changes with frequency.
This makes the BX100 an excellent candidate for Burmester's high-current amplification, including the 218, 259, 909 MK5 and 159 monoblocks, depending on the room, listening level and overall system design.
350-Watt Nominal Power Handling
Burmester specifies 350 watts of nominal load capacity according to DIN EN 60268-5.
Combined with its dual 260 mm woofers, 89 dB sensitivity and substantial cabinet volume, the BX100 is designed to accommodate the output capability of serious reference amplification.
That does not mean the speaker simply requires the highest possible wattage. Current capability, stability into low impedance and amplifier quality are more important than selecting amplification based on a single power specification.
Up to 311 Pounds Per Loudspeaker
The physical scale of the BX100 is substantial.
On its standard feet, each loudspeaker weighs approximately 135 kg, or 298 lb. Configured with spikes, weight increases to approximately 141 kg, or 311 lb.
The cabinet stands approximately 57.7 inches high on feet, increasing to approximately 59.5 inches with spikes, with a depth of 26 inches.
Despite that mass, the cabinet itself is only about 11.4 inches wide on its standard feet, giving the BX100 a considerably more slender frontal appearance than its weight and bass capability suggest.
Extensive Customization
The BX100 is designed as much for architectural integration as acoustic performance.
Burmester offers extensive customization of the front, main cabinet and contrasting central waist section, allowing different surfaces and finishes to be combined.
This makes it possible to specify the BX100 as a visually restrained loudspeaker that integrates with the room or deliberately use contrasting materials to emphasize its sculptural architecture.
With a loudspeaker of this physical and visual scale, finish selection becomes part of the system design rather than an afterthought.
