Burmester B28 Floorstanding Loudspeakers

Complimentary White Glove Delivery • Travel Reimbursement*

The Burmester B28 Loudspeakers are 3-way floorstanding speakers engineered to deliver substantial full-range performance from an elegant, relatively narrow enclosure. Positioned between the B18 and larger B38, the B28 combines a Burmester Air Motion Transformer tweeter, dedicated 170 mm midrange driver and two 170 mm woofers in a completely front-firing architecture.

With a published frequency response of 39 Hz to 31 kHz, 4-ohm nominal impedance and 87 dB sensitivity, the B28 provides significantly greater bass capability and dynamic capacity than its slender proportions suggest. Each driver section is acoustically isolated within the enclosure, while the sophisticated crossover occupies its own dedicated chamber to reduce interaction between the electrical and mechanical elements of the loudspeaker.

Adjustable bass response adds another important advantage, allowing the B28 to be optimized around its position in the room rather than forcing every installation to work with one fixed low-frequency alignment.

True 3-Way Architecture

The B28 uses a 3-way bass-reflex architecture with dedicated drivers for bass, midrange and high-frequency reproduction.

Its driver complement includes:

Burmester Air Motion Transformer tweeter
170 mm dedicated midrange driver
2 × 170 mm long-excursion woofers

The crossover divides the system at approximately 150 Hz and 2.4 kHz, allowing each driver to concentrate on a more focused portion of the audible spectrum.

Unlike the side-firing bass architecture used in some larger Burmester speakers, all of the B28's primary drivers are located on the front baffle. This creates a straightforward front-firing configuration while maintaining the slim proportions of the cabinet.

Air Motion Transformer Tweeter

High frequencies are reproduced by a Burmester Air Motion Transformer, or AMT.

Instead of using a conventional dome, the AMT employs a lightweight folded diaphragm that moves air through the expansion and contraction of its pleats.

The design combines low moving mass with a relatively large effective radiating area, giving the tweeter the speed required for transient reproduction while extending the B28's published frequency response to 31 kHz.

Dedicated 170 mm Midrange

The B28 uses a dedicated 170 mm midrange driver rather than asking one of its bass drivers to reproduce the entire lower and middle portion of the spectrum.

The midrange operates between the approximately 150 Hz and 2.4 kHz crossover points, covering a critical portion of the musical spectrum that includes much of the fundamental information from voices and instruments.

Giving this range its own driver reduces the competing demands placed on the transducer and allows the twin woofers to concentrate on low-frequency reproduction.

Twin 170 mm Woofers

Two 170 mm long-excursion bass drivers provide the B28's low-frequency foundation.

Using a pair of smaller woofers rather than one extremely large driver gives Burmester substantial combined radiating area while preserving the speaker's narrow front profile.

The bass system extends the B28's response to a published 39 Hz at ±3 dB, giving the speaker genuine low-frequency capability without requiring a physically imposing wide enclosure.

Separate Acoustic Chambers

Burmester places the B28's drivers within separate internal chambers.

This prevents pressure generated by the bass system from directly interacting with the midrange section and allows the internal acoustic environment surrounding each driver to be optimized around its specific operating range.

The result is a cabinet that functions as a collection of purpose-designed acoustic sections rather than one large shared internal volume.

Isolated Crossover Chamber

The B28's crossover network also receives its own separate internal chamber.

A loudspeaker crossover contains components that process the full electrical signal arriving from the amplifier before distributing the appropriate frequencies to each driver.

Physically separating this network from the high acoustic pressures and mechanical vibration generated inside the main enclosure helps protect these sensitive components from unnecessary mechanical interaction.

This is the kind of construction detail that is largely invisible from outside the speaker but matters in a loudspeaker designed to operate at this level.

Adjustable Bass Response

Burmester equips the B28 with room-adaptation capability for the bass range.

The system allows low-frequency output to be adjusted according to loudspeaker placement and room acoustics. This is particularly useful when the speakers must operate closer to a rear or side wall, where boundary reinforcement can substantially increase perceived bass output.

The bass-reflex system can also be adjusted, providing another method of controlling the B28's low-frequency behavior.

Instead of treating room interaction as something that must be corrected entirely through positioning, the B28 provides useful mechanical and electrical tools for optimizing the speaker after installation.

Engineered for Real Listening Rooms

The B28 is substantial without becoming architecturally overwhelming.

Each loudspeaker measures approximately 223 mm wide and 1,144 mm high, with a cabinet depth of approximately 433 mm, and weighs 37 kg, or about 82 lb.

That relatively narrow front profile makes the B28 considerably easier to integrate visually than its twin-woofer architecture might suggest.

Its adjustable bass system further expands placement flexibility, making the B28 particularly compelling for serious two-channel systems installed in real residential listening environments rather than dedicated rooms with unlimited placement options.

Matched Stereo Pairs

Burmester applies an unusually rigorous matching process to its loudspeaker production.

The company states that its loudspeaker chassis are run in for seven days before assembly. Driver parameters are then measured, and computer analysis is used to create stereo pairs with extremely close tolerances.

This matters because stereo imaging depends not only on the quality of each individual loudspeaker but also on how consistently the left and right speakers behave relative to one another.

Matching at the driver level helps create a pair of loudspeakers that operates as a coherent stereo system.

The B28's combination of AMT high-frequency reproduction, dedicated midrange, twin 170 mm woofers and 4-ohm impedance makes amplifier quality important. Independent measurements have also shown substantial output capability from the twin-woofer system, reinforcing that the B28 is considerably more capable than its relatively narrow cabinet suggests.

Burmester B28 at The Grid HiFi

The Grid HiFi in Houston specializes in Burmester high-end audio and complete two-channel systems. The B28 is particularly compelling for listeners who want the scale and driver separation of a true 3-way Burmester loudspeaker without moving to the significantly larger B38, BC150 or BX100 platforms.

We can match the B28 with the appropriate Burmester integrated amplifier or separate preamplifier and power amplifier combination, then optimize speaker placement and bass adjustment around your listening room.

We can also design the complete system around the B28, including digital or analog sources, amplification, cabling, power infrastructure, equipment support and final system setup.
