Overview

Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus – Flagship 4-Way Reference Loudspeakers

The Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus is one of the most iconic loudspeakers ever created, combining extraordinary acoustic engineering with a sculptural design that has defined high-end audio for more than three decades. Handcrafted in Worthing, England, the Nautilus represents Bowers & Wilkins' uncompromising pursuit of sonic accuracy, transparency, and musical realism.

Its unmistakable spiral enclosure is more than an artistic statement. Every curve serves an acoustic purpose, with long, tapered transmission tubes engineered to absorb unwanted rearward sound energy from the drivers. This revolutionary approach reduces internal reflections and coloration, allowing the Nautilus to reproduce music with exceptional clarity, detail, and precision.

Featuring a sophisticated four-way driver configuration, an external active crossover, and dedicated amplification requirements, the Nautilus is designed for the most ambitious reference stereo systems. Each loudspeaker incorporates four individually optimized drive units, including a 12-inch aluminum bass driver, delivering extraordinary resolution across the audible spectrum.

Key Features

  • Iconic Nautilus Design: Sculptural spiral enclosure engineered around acoustic performance rather than conventional cabinet architecture.

  • Four-Way Loudspeaker System: Dedicated bass, lower-midrange, upper-midrange, and high-frequency drivers provide exceptional separation and precision.

  • Nautilus Tube Loading: Long, tapered damping tubes absorb unwanted rearward energy, minimizing internal reflections and driver coloration.

  • 12-Inch Aluminum Bass Driver: A powerful 300mm woofer delivers deep, controlled low-frequency reproduction.

  • Dedicated Midrange Drivers: A 100mm aluminum/polymer sandwich cone and 50mm aluminum dome reproduce critical vocal and instrumental frequencies.

  • 25mm Aluminum Dome Tweeter: Engineered for detailed, extended high-frequency reproduction.

  • External Active Crossover: Precision electronic frequency division enables independent amplification of each driver.

  • Eight Amplifier Channels Per Pair: Four dedicated amplifier channels are required for each Nautilus loudspeaker.

  • Handcrafted in England: Each speaker is individually manufactured, finished, and tuned by Bowers & Wilkins specialists.

  • Custom Finish Options: Standard Midnight Blue, Black, and Silver finishes, with bespoke color matching available through the manufacturer.

Revolutionary Nautilus Tube Technology

The Nautilus was developed around a fundamental acoustic challenge: eliminating the unwanted sound energy generated behind a loudspeaker driver.

Traditional loudspeaker enclosures can introduce internal reflections and resonances that affect the driver's performance. Bowers & Wilkins addressed this challenge with individually engineered, tapered damping tubes that progressively absorb rearward sound energy.

The Nautilus' distinctive spiral bass enclosure and elongated midrange and tweeter tubes are direct expressions of this acoustic principle. The result is a loudspeaker designed to reproduce recorded music with minimal enclosure coloration and exceptional transparency.

This pioneering technology continues to influence Bowers & Wilkins loudspeaker engineering today.

Active Crossover and Dedicated Amplification

Unlike conventional passive loudspeakers, the Nautilus uses an external active crossover to divide the audio signal into four frequency bands before amplification.

Each driver receives power from its own dedicated amplifier channel, providing precise control over frequency distribution and driver behavior.

A complete stereo Nautilus system requires eight channels of amplification, with each channel delivering 100–300 watts into 8 ohms and maintaining consistent gain and phase characteristics.

Careful selection of amplification, source components, cabling, and system configuration is essential to realizing the Nautilus' full capabilities.

A Masterpiece of British Loudspeaker Engineering

More than three decades after its introduction, the Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus remains an extraordinary example of engineering-led industrial design.

Every loudspeaker is handcrafted, painted, polished, assembled, and tuned by specialists in Worthing, England. Its intricate construction and demanding manufacturing process reflect the level of craftsmanship required to produce one of the world's most recognizable reference loudspeakers.

The Nautilus is equally at home as the centerpiece of a dedicated listening room or an architectural statement within a luxury residence.
