Overview
AudioQuest ThunderBird XLR Interconnect Cable
Mythical Creature Performance with ZERO-Tech and Dual-72V DBS
The AudioQuest ThunderBird XLR Interconnect Cable brings AudioQuest's Mythical Creatures technology to high-performance balanced analog audio systems.
Designed for reference-level HiFi systems, ThunderBird combines solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) conductors, ZERO-Tech, Level 6 Linear Noise-Dissipation, Dual-72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS), FEP Air-Tube insulation, Carbon/Graphene Mesh-Network, 6% Silver-Plated RF Drain-Wires, Copper-Plated RF-Draining barrels, and Hanging-Silver directly over Red-Copper plugs.
AudioQuest positions ThunderBird immediately below its FireBird and Dragon analog interconnects, making it an important entry point into the company's flagship Mythical Creatures family.
For high-resolution systems built around premium DACs, streamers, preamplifiers, integrated amplifiers, and power amplifiers, ThunderBird is engineered to preserve dynamics, transient response, spatial information, and low-level musical detail while aggressively addressing radio-frequency noise.
Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ Conductors
ThunderBird uses solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) conductors, AudioQuest's finest copper conductor material.
Solid conductors eliminate the electrical and magnetic interaction between individual strands that can occur in conventional stranded cables.
PSC+ takes conductor quality further with extreme-purity copper and an exceptionally smooth conductor surface. AudioQuest uses this construction to minimize distortion caused by grain boundaries while maximizing linear RF Noise-Dissipation.
In a highly resolving audio system, the goal is not to add a sonic signature. It is to preserve as much of the original analog signal as possible as it travels between components.
ZERO-Tech
ThunderBird incorporates AudioQuest's advanced ZERO-Tech architecture.
Conventional cables develop characteristic impedance because of the electrostatic relationship between their high and low signal conductors.
ZERO-Tech is designed to eliminate that electrostatic field, preventing the cable from having conventional characteristic impedance.
AudioQuest developed the technology to reduce impedance-mismatch effects between a cable and its connected source and load circuits.
The result is designed to provide linear, wide-bandwidth RF Noise-Dissipation and uncompressed transient response.
In a reference-quality audio system, where transient speed and extremely small changes in signal level can contribute to realism and dimensionality, ZERO-Tech is a fundamental part of ThunderBird's design.
Dual-72V Dielectric-Bias System
ThunderBird XLR incorporates AudioQuest's Dual-72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS).
The insulation surrounding a conductor acts as a dielectric and can absorb energy from the signal. Some of that energy can subsequently be released, contributing to distortion.
DBS creates a continuous electrostatic field that polarizes the cable's insulation.
AudioQuest uses this biasing to minimize dielectric noise and linearize the insulation's behavior, improving the cable's ability to dissipate induced RF noise across a wide bandwidth.
For ThunderBird XLR, AudioQuest uses a Dual-72V DBS configuration to preserve ZERO-Tech's complete isolation between the signal conductors.
Level 6 Linear Noise-Dissipation
Modern audio systems operate in an increasingly hostile RF environment.
Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth, computers, networking equipment, televisions, switching power supplies, smart-home electronics, and other wireless devices surround the extremely small analog signals traveling between high-end audio components.
ThunderBird uses Level 6 Linear Noise-Dissipation to reduce the masking effects of this radio-frequency interference.
Its Noise-Dissipation architecture combines:
- ZERO-Tech
- Carbon/Graphene Mesh-Network
- Direction-Controlled conductors
- 6% Silver-Plated RF Drain-Wires
- Dual-72V DBS
Instead of relying on conventional shielding alone, ThunderBird is designed to control how RF energy interacts with the cable and where that unwanted energy is dissipated.
Carbon/Graphene Mesh-Network
ThunderBird incorporates AudioQuest's Carbon/Graphene Mesh-Network.
Alternating layers of graphene, carbon-loaded synthetic materials, and metal effectively help "shield the shield."
These layers are designed to absorb and reflect radio-frequency energy before much of it can reach the ground-connected shield.
Reducing RF contamination at the ground reference is especially important in highly resolving audio systems, where noise can mask low-level musical information.
FEP Air-Tube Insulation
A major technological distinction between Pegasus and ThunderBird is ThunderBird's use of FEP Air-Tube insulation.
AudioQuest minimizes contact between ThunderBird's positive conductors and the surrounding FEP insulation.
Air absorbs almost no energy, while FEP offers an exceptionally favorable dielectric constant and very low signal interference. Using an Air-Tube structure therefore minimizes the amount of solid material touching the conductor.
AudioQuest takes a different approach with the negative conductors, intentionally using lossy insulation without air or FEP because the negative connection performs a different electrical role.
This carefully engineered dielectric environment is designed to reduce smearing and preserve dynamics, transient information, and clarity.
6% Silver-Plated RF Drain-Wires
ThunderBird incorporates Direction-Controlled 6% Silver-Plated RF Drain-Wires.
At radio frequencies, electrical energy travels primarily along the surface of a conductor. Applying high-purity silver to that surface provides an efficient pathway for RF energy.
These drain wires work with ThunderBird's Carbon/Graphene Mesh-Network and Direction-Controlled architecture to efficiently dissipate induced RF noise.
Direction-Controlled Conductors
Every internal conductor in ThunderBird is Direction-Controlled.
The grain structure created during conductor manufacturing is not perfectly symmetrical. AudioQuest controls conductor orientation to manage the resulting differences in RF impedance.
Signal conductors and RF drain wires are oriented as part of ThunderBird's complete Noise-Dissipation architecture.
Directionality is therefore not simply an installation feature—it is part of the cable's RF-management strategy.
Copper-Plated RF-Draining Barrels
ThunderBird uses grounded Copper-Plated RF-Draining barrels.
A conventional metal connector housing can capacitively couple radio-frequency energy into the conductors inside the cable.
AudioQuest's grounded copper-plated barrels are designed to prevent this behavior and maximize Noise-Dissipation through the connector assembly.
ThunderBird's RF-management strategy therefore extends from its internal conductors all the way through its XLR terminations.
Hanging-Silver over Red-Copper Plugs
ThunderBird uses AudioQuest's finest Hanging-Silver directly over extreme-purity Red-Copper plugs.
Rather than tumbling the connector in a lower-grade plating solution, AudioQuest hangs the Red-Copper connector directly in pure silver.
This places high-quality silver directly over the extreme-purity copper base material without an unnecessary intermediate layer.
The goal is uncompromised signal transfer through the termination itself.

Pegasus vs. ThunderBird XLR
For customers moving up through the AudioQuest XLR interconnect range, ThunderBird represents the transition into the Mythical Creatures series.
Both Pegasus and ThunderBird use several important AudioQuest technologies, including PSC+ copper, ZERO-Tech, Dual-72V DBS, Level 6 Noise-Dissipation, and 6% Silver-Plated RF Drain-Wires.
ThunderBird advances the dielectric design with FEP Air-Tube insulation, minimizing contact between its positive conductors and insulation.
For systems built around increasingly sophisticated electronics and highly revealing loudspeakers, ThunderBird is designed to take the same fundamental AudioQuest principles to a higher level.
