AudioQuest ThunderBird BASS Speaker Cable — Pair

A dedicated bass and midrange cable for AudioQuest’s Mythical Creatures Series bi-wire systems.

AudioQuest ThunderBird BASS is not a conventional full-range speaker cable. It is specifically engineered for the bass and midrange inputs of bi-wireable or tri-wireable loudspeakers, where it is designed to work alongside ThunderBird ZERO on the treble section.

ThunderBird BASS combines Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) conductors, ZERO-Tech, patented RF/ND-Tech, Carbon-Based Linearized Noise Dissipation, and a 72V Dielectric-Bias System with Level-X RF Noise-Trap. Together, these technologies are designed to control RF noise while allowing the substantial transient current demanded by low-frequency drivers to move freely from amplifier to loudspeaker.

Designed Specifically for Bass & Midrange

ThunderBird BASS is engineered for frequencies 10kHz and below. AudioQuest specifically states that it should not be used full-range or connected to a loudspeaker’s treble input.

In a bi-wire system, the intended configuration is:

ThunderBird ZERO → Treble Input
ThunderBird BASS → Bass / Midrange Input

Separating these paths keeps the large magnetic fields associated with bass energy away from the cable carrying delicate high-frequency information. In a tri-wire system, ThunderBird BASS can be used for both the midrange and bass sections, with ZERO feeding the treble section.

100% Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+)

ThunderBird BASS uses Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ conductors.

PSC+ is AudioQuest’s highest-grade copper conductor material, chosen for its extreme purity and exceptionally smooth surface. AudioQuest uses solid conductors to eliminate strand interaction, while the purity and surface quality of PSC+ minimize distortion associated with grain boundaries.

The conductors are also Direction-Controlled to support the cable’s RF Noise-Dissipation architecture.

ZERO-Tech

ThunderBird BASS incorporates AudioQuest’s ZERO-Tech, an architecture designed to eliminate the cable’s fixed characteristic impedance.

Traditional speaker cables can create characteristic-impedance mismatches between amplifier, cable, and loudspeaker. ZERO-Tech minimizes interaction between the conductors and dielectric, allowing uncompressed transient-current transfer while maintaining consistent RF Noise Dissipation across a wide frequency range.

This is particularly relevant in a bass cable, where large transient-current demands are a fundamental part of reproducing low frequencies with authority and control.

RF/ND-Tech

One of the defining technologies of ThunderBird BASS is AudioQuest’s patented RF-on-ground Noise-Dissipation Technology (RF/ND-Tech).

Ground conductors can behave like antennas, collecting radio-frequency noise and carrying that energy into sensitive audio circuitry. AudioQuest’s RF/ND-Tech uses a common-mode phase-cancelling array to provide linear noise dissipation across the entire length of the cable.

The technology is covered by U.S. Patent No. 8,988,168.

Carbon-Based Linearized Noise-Dissipation System

ThunderBird BASS also employs AudioQuest’s Carbon-Based Linearized Noise-Dissipation System (NDS).

Multiple shields and a carbon-based resistive network are used to convert much of the incoming RF energy into heat. Remaining noise energy is directed away from sensitive amplifier circuitry through Direction-Controlled signal and shield conductors.

AudioQuest describes the system as “linearized” because it is designed to remain effective across an extremely wide bandwidth rather than targeting only selected frequencies.

72V Dielectric-Bias System with Level-X RF Noise-Trap

ThunderBird BASS incorporates AudioQuest’s 72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS) with Level-X RF Noise-Trap.

The insulation surrounding a conductor behaves as a dielectric and can store energy. DBS maintains a continuous electrostatic bias across that dielectric, which AudioQuest says linearizes its behavior and improves the cable’s ability to dissipate induced noise across a wide bandwidth.

The integrated Level-X RF Noise-Trap further draws radio-frequency noise away from the cable and connected audio circuitry.

Premium Terminations

ThunderBird BASS offers three termination configurations:

• 2 U-Spades → 2 U-Spades
• 2 Bananas → 2 Bananas
• 2 Multi-Spades → 2 Multi-Spades

AudioQuest particularly recommends considering U-Spades with the substantial size and weight of its Mythical Creatures speaker cables, especially where a banana connector cannot fully seat in the binding post. Bananas can be preferable with some EU-compliant isolated amplifier binding posts.

ThunderBird BASS + ThunderBird ZERO

This distinction is especially important when we build these products on The Grid.

ThunderBird BASS should not be presented as an alternative to ThunderBird ZERO. They are complementary cables. ThunderBird ZERO handles the treble—or can operate full-range—while ThunderBird BASS is optimized specifically for the bass/midrange section of a bi-wire loudspeaker.

AudioQuest specifically warns not to bi-wire using two ZERO cables in parallel, because doing so can create a very-high-frequency resonant peak. For an AudioQuest bi-wire configuration, the correct combination is one ZERO + one BASS.

AudioQuest also offers these together as a COMBO configuration, which we'll want to explain clearly when we get to that product.
