Thunder combines solid Long-Grain Copper (LGC) and Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) conductors, ZERO-Tech, RF/ND-Tech, 72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS), 6% silver-plated drains, and Direction-Controlled Conductors with a continuous current capacity of up to 20 amps RMS.

Designed Specifically for High/Variable-Current Components

Thunder isn't simply a general-purpose power cable with a larger connector.

AudioQuest designed the High (Variable) Current version around equipment that can suddenly demand substantial amounts of current. Its 20A RMS current capacity at 125VAC is complemented by the ability to withstand transient-current peaks many times its continuous rating.

Solid LGC + Perfect-Surface Copper Conductors

Thunder uses a carefully selected combination of solid high-purity Long-Grain Copper (LGC) and Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) conductors.

The use of solid conductors is significant. Unlike stranded designs, there are no individual strands constantly interacting with one another as current moves through the cable. AudioQuest identifies this strand interaction as a source of transient intermodulation distortion.

LGC provides a smoother conductive path than conventional OFHC copper, while AudioQuest's higher-purity Perfect-Surface Copper further minimizes the distortion associated with grain boundaries and conductor surfaces.

ZERO-Tech — Uncompressed High-Current Transfer

For a power amplifier, low resistance alone isn't enough.

AudioQuest's ZERO-Tech eliminates the electrostatic field between the cable's high and low conductors, creating a geometry with no characteristic impedance while also supporting linear RF Noise-Dissipation.

The objective is uncompressed transient-current delivery.

When an amplifier suddenly needs current to reproduce a bass transient, orchestral crescendo, or explosive movie soundtrack, Thunder is engineered to deliver that demand without unnecessarily restricting the component.

RF/ND-Tech — Wide-Bandwidth RF Noise Dissipation

The AC ground conductor can behave like an antenna, collecting radio-frequency noise that can bypass a component's power supply and couple directly into sensitive audio and video circuitry.

Thunder incorporates AudioQuest's patented RF/ND-Tech to combat this problem.

The technology combines a common-mode phase-cancelling array with proprietary dielectric materials and differential linear filtering, reducing induced RF noise across a wide bandwidth.

This allows Thunder to address two very different requirements simultaneously: high-current delivery and RF noise reduction.

72V Dielectric-Bias System

Thunder also incorporates AudioQuest's 72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS).

Insulation isn't electrically invisible—it behaves as a dielectric and can store and release energy. DBS continuously biases the cable's insulation, which AudioQuest says minimizes dielectric noise while improving the linearity of its wide-bandwidth RF Noise-Dissipation.

This technology moves Thunder well beyond AudioQuest's more affordable power cables and places it firmly within the company's high-end Storm Series architecture.

6% Silver-Plated Drain Conductors

Thunder uses 6% silver-plated high-quality copper drain conductors as part of its Noise-Dissipation system.

That's worth emphasizing because it represents a substantial increase from the light silver plating used in some of AudioQuest's lower-level power cables.

The silver is applied where its conductivity provides the greatest benefit to RF Noise-Dissipation rather than simply increasing material cost throughout the entire cable.

Direction-Controlled Conductors

Every internal conductor in Thunder is Direction-Controlled.

AudioQuest controls conductor orientation to manage RF impedance variations in the metal and direct noise away from the connected equipment. When applicable, arrows on the connectors indicate the intended orientation.

C13 and High-Current C19 Options

For U.S. and Canadian systems, Thunder High (Variable) Current is available with:

C13 → 3-Prong Wall Plug — for components using the conventional IEC-C13 connection.

C19 → 3-Prong Wall Plug — for equipment using the larger high-current IEC-C19 connection.

This is particularly important with large amplifiers and premium power conditioners that require a C19 connection.
