The Audio Research Reference 7 represents a new generation of the company's reference-level vacuum tube preamplifiers. Developed from the same engineering program that produced the flagship Reference 20, it introduces a redesigned mechanical platform, a refined power supply, and carefully selected signal-path components.

Rather than simply updating the Reference 6SE, Audio Research developed the Reference 7 around the advances of its new flagship architecture. The result is a line-stage preamplifier designed to reveal more of the recording while preserving the texture, scale, and musical character that define the Audio Research listening experience.

Born from the Reference 20

The Reference 7 shares the mechanical architecture developed for the Reference 20.

Its multi-metal, layered chassis is engineered to manage resonance through controlled energy distribution. Inside, custom suspended, mass-loaded circuit boards help isolate sensitive audio circuitry from mechanical vibration.

These are not merely cosmetic changes. Audio Research identifies resonance control and circuit-board isolation as foundational elements of its latest preamplifier platform, developed to preserve the integrity of the signal passing through the component.

A Quieter Foundation for the Music

The Reference 7 introduces solid-state power-supply regulation, an important change intended to lower the noise floor and improve long-term stability.

The design also incorporates reference-grade output coupling capacitors derived from the Reference 20 development program.

Together, these changes are intended to preserve low-level musical information while maintaining the dynamic expression and tonal character expected from a reference Audio Research preamplifier.

Vacuum Tube Performance with Modern System Flexibility

The Reference 7 uses four 6H30P dual-triode tubes in its line-stage circuitry.

Its connection options accommodate sophisticated two-channel systems, including four balanced and four single-ended inputs, two pairs of main outputs in each format, and a dedicated subwoofer output.

The buffered, solid-state subwoofer output follows the main volume control, making it possible to incorporate a powered subwoofer without relying on an additional volume-control arrangement.

With 12 dB of balanced gain and 6 dB of single-ended gain, the Reference 7 is designed to work as the control center of a high-performance system built around a separate power amplifier.

A preamplifier sits at the center of the listening experience. It selects the source, controls playback level, and delivers the signal to the power amplifier.

The Reference 7 is designed for that responsibility. Its combination of mechanical isolation, updated regulation, vacuum tube circuitry, and extensive connectivity makes it a natural consideration for systems built around Audio Research power amplifiers and revealing reference loudspeakers.

It is a dedicated line-stage preamplifier, not an integrated amplifier or a phono preamplifier. Turntables require a separate phono stage, while loudspeakers require an external power amplifier.
