Overview

Aurender A20 Signature Analog Music Server, Streamer & DAC

The Aurender A20 is a reference-grade analog music server, network streamer, DAC and headphone amplifier built around the same dual-mono AKM AK4497 conversion architecture used in the flagship A30. It combines high-resolution streaming, optional internal music storage, variable balanced XLR and RCA analog outputs, dedicated USB digital output and four digital inputs in a single high-end source component. Aurender Music

Designed for listeners who want A30-level digital playback without integrated CD ripping and library-management hardware, the A20 replaces the A30's factory-installed storage with two user-accessible 2.5-inch HDD/SSD bays. Install local storage when needed—or leave the bays empty for a streaming-focused system.

Dual-Mono AKM AK4497 DAC

The A20 uses two AKM AK4497 DACs in a dual-mono configuration, dedicating conversion architecture to each channel. Its analog outputs support PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD512, while onboard MQA decoding is also supported. Aurender Music

For PCM playback, the A20 provides optional upsampling to 705.6/768kHz. Upsampling can also remain disabled for playback at the source file's native sample rate.

OCXO Precision Clock & FPGA Processing

An OCXO audio word clock works with FPGA-based processing and a sub-100-femtosecond jitter-reducing clock generator to precisely time digital audio data before conversion.

This is an important distinction within Aurender's analog-output lineup: the A20 is engineered around the company's higher-level clock, DAC and power-supply architecture rather than simply combining a streamer and commodity DAC in one chassis. Aurender Music

Full Linear Power Supply

Aurender equips the A20 with a fully linear power supply using four discrete toroidal transformers, separating major internal sections to reduce interaction between the computer, digital and analog circuitry.

Power distribution includes:

Circuit Linear Power Supply
CPU 1 × 50W
Left DAC 1 × 25W
Right DAC 1 × 25W
FPGA & Headphone Section 1 × 35W

A supercapacitor-based UPS provides controlled shutdown protection if AC power is unexpectedly interrupted. Aurender Music

Variable XLR & RCA Analog Outputs

The A20 provides both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA analog outputs with DAC-level volume control.

This gives the A20 two distinct system configurations: use it as a conventional source feeding a high-end preamplifier or integrated amplifier, or connect its variable outputs directly to a power amplifier for a streamlined digital system with fewer components in the signal path. Aurender Music

Dedicated Headphone Amplifier

A front-panel 1/4-inch headphone output gives the A20 a dedicated headphone-listening path without requiring an external headphone amplifier.

The front panel provides direct switching between LINE OUT and HEADPHONE, along with physical volume, input, playback and display controls. Aurender Music

Four Digital Inputs

The A20 can also function as the DAC for additional digital sources.

Connections include:

  • 1 × RCA coaxial S/PDIF
  • 1 × BNC coaxial S/PDIF
  • 2 × optical/Toslink

A CD transport, television or other compatible digital source can therefore use the A20's dual-mono DAC and analog output stage rather than requiring a separate converter. Aurender Music

Dedicated Isolated USB Audio Output

For systems using an external DAC, the A20 includes Aurender's dedicated USB Audio Class 2.0 output. This output is physically and electrically isolated from the noise-generating CPU circuitry.

USB output supports:

PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz
Native DSD up to DSD512
DoP up to DSD256 Aurender Music

The two rear USB 3.0 data ports are separate from the dedicated USB Audio connection and are intended for file transfer, external storage and compatible control devices. Aurender Music

Dual User-Installable Music Storage Bays

Two rear-accessible 2.5-inch HDD/SSD bays allow the A20's local library capacity to be configured around the owner rather than forcing a predetermined amount of storage.

Aurender specifies support for up to two 8TB SSDs, providing as much as 16TB of internal solid-state library storage. The drives are optional and not included with the standard A20. Aurender Music

A separate 480GB NVMe SSD is dedicated to the operating system and playback cache. Aurender's caching architecture loads music into solid-state memory for playback, reducing activity from the library storage during listening.

Double-Isolated Gigabit Ethernet

The A20 uses a double-isolated Gigabit Ethernet connection incorporating two transformer-isolation stages for additional network-noise filtration without intentionally restricting network bandwidth. A wired Ethernet connection is required for normal network operation. Aurender Music

Aurender Conductor & Integrated Streaming

The A20 runs the Aurender Conductor software ecosystem for music-library navigation, streaming-service integration, playlists, playback control and system settings.

Aurender currently integrates TIDAL, Qobuz, Internet Radio, Spotify Connect and AirPlay. Local music can reside on the internal HDD/SSD bays, external USB storage or network-attached storage. Aurender Music

Critical Listening Mode can disable the front-panel display, buttons and unnecessary background computing processes during playback.

8.8-Inch IPS Display

The machined-aluminum front panel incorporates an 8.8-inch, 1920 × 480 IPS color LCD, providing album artwork, track information and playback status.

Unlike transport-only Aurender models, the A20 also incorporates a physical volume knob and direct output/input controls because it can operate as the complete digital front end of the system. Aurender Music

A20 vs. A30

The A20 and A30 share the core dual-mono AKM AK4497 DAC architecture and reference-level analog playback approach, but the A20 removes the A30's integrated CD ripping and advanced local-library management functions. Aurender Music

Instead of the A30's factory-installed 10TB library drive, the A20 provides two user-installable 2.5-inch storage bays. This makes the A20 particularly attractive for listeners who primarily stream music or already maintain a digital library and don't need the A30's CD-archiving capabilities.

Aurender A20 at The Grid HiFi

The Aurender A20 is a serious digital front end for systems where streaming, local music storage and reference-quality analog conversion need to live in one component. Its dual-mono AK4497 DACs, OCXO clocking, full linear power supply, variable XLR outputs and dedicated USB Audio output allow it to serve as either a complete analog source or a high-performance music server feeding an external DAC.

The Grid HiFi can configure the A20 with the appropriate SSD storage, amplification, DAC, network infrastructure and reference loudspeakers for a complete high-end two-channel system.
