The Burmester 101 Integrated Amplifier combines the refinement of a dedicated analog preamplifier with efficient, high-output Class D amplification in one exceptionally compact component. Part of Burmester’s Classic Line, the 101 delivers 120 watts per channel into 4 ohms while providing balanced connectivity, configurable inputs, a balanced preamplifier output and sophisticated system integration.

Rather than relying on an off-the-shelf amplification platform, Burmester developed the 101 around its own Class D amplifier technology. The result brings substantial power and loudspeaker control to a chassis measuring less than four inches high, making the 101 an elegant foundation for a serious two-channel system where performance and space efficiency are equally important.

Burmester Class D Amplification

The 101 represents Burmester’s approach to Class D amplification, using the technology to achieve substantial output power from a remarkably compact chassis.

Burmester rates the amplifier at 2 × 120 watts into 4 ohms, providing the power required to drive a broad range of high-performance loudspeakers without the size and heat associated with a conventional high-output amplifier.

The amplifier’s efficient architecture also allows the 101 to maintain the slim proportions and understated design language of Burmester’s Classic Line.

Balanced Analog Architecture

The 101 is designed around balanced connections wherever possible.

Three balanced XLR line inputs accommodate primary analog sources, while two RCA inputs provide compatibility with conventional unbalanced components.

This gives the 101 enough connectivity to serve as the control center of a complete two-channel system while preserving balanced signal transmission for compatible Burmester and high-end source components.

Configurable Inputs

Individual source inputs can be adjusted to accommodate differences in output level between connected components.

This allows multiple sources to be integrated without dramatic changes in playback volume when switching between them.

Inputs can also be individually named, making everyday operation more intuitive in systems containing several analog sources.

Balanced Preamplifier Output

A balanced XLR preamplifier output significantly expands the 101’s system flexibility.

An external power amplifier can be added while retaining the 101 as the system’s preamplifier and control center. This creates a straightforward upgrade path for systems that may eventually require greater amplification capability.

The 101 can also operate in a dedicated Pre-Out Only mode, which switches off its internal power amplifier section when external amplification is being used.

This allows the 101 to evolve with the system rather than becoming redundant when a separate power amplifier is added.

Home Theater Integration

The Burmester 101 can also be incorporated into a combined music and home theater system.

Its Surround Thruput capability allows the appropriate input to operate with a fixed signal path for integration with a surround processor or home theater system.

This makes it possible for the same front loudspeakers and amplification to serve a dedicated high-end stereo system and a multichannel theater without compromising normal two-channel operation.

Bass Adjustment

The 101 includes switchable bass control, allowing low-frequency response to be adjusted when system placement, loudspeaker characteristics or room acoustics require it.

For purist operation, the tone-control functionality can be bypassed so that the signal follows the most direct path through the amplifier.

System Control and BurLink

Burmester equips the 101 with BurLink system control and DC remote connections for integration with compatible Burmester components.

The included remote control provides access to the amplifier’s primary operating functions from the listening position, while BurLink allows the 101 to participate in a coordinated Burmester system.

Compact Classic Line Construction

At approximately 482 mm wide and only 93 mm high, the 101 packages a complete high-end integrated amplifier into an unusually slim chassis.

Its proportions match other Burmester Classic Line components, allowing the amplifier to form part of a visually unified system without requiring the physical space of the company’s larger amplification platforms.

The polished Burmester front panel, centralized volume control and restrained controls preserve the distinctive industrial design associated with the company’s Berlin-built electronics.

Technical Details

Burmester rates the 101 at 2 × 120 watts into 4 ohms. Independent laboratory testing has measured considerably greater output, but for the product listing I would retain Burmester’s official rating rather than substitute third-party measurements.
