Overview
Focal Sopra N°3 3-Way Floorstanding Loudspeaker (each)
The Focal Sopra N°3 is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker of the Sopra range, combining the refinement and precision of Focal's advanced driver technologies with the scale, dynamics and low-frequency authority required for larger listening rooms.
Designed and manufactured in France, Sopra N°3 features dual 8.25-inch W-cone woofers, a 6.5-inch W-cone midrange with TMD suspension and NIC motor technology, and Focal's pure Beryllium inverted-dome tweeter with Infinite Horn Loading.
The result is a loudspeaker capable of sounding both enormous and incredibly precise—delivering deep, articulate bass, highly transparent midrange and exceptional high-frequency detail without sacrificing the warmth and musicality that make a system enjoyable for hours at a time.
For listeners with the room to let it perform, Sopra N°3 is the ultimate expression of the Sopra range.
The Flagship Sopra
Sopra N°3 takes the technology and design philosophy of the Sopra N°2 and scales it up.
The larger enclosure and dual 8.25-inch woofers give the N°3 significantly greater low-frequency capability and physical presence, making it particularly well suited to larger listening spaces.
Focal recommends the Sopra N°3 for rooms approximately 430 to 860 square feet (40–80m²).
This is a speaker designed to move air.
Give it enough room and the Sopra N°3 can create the kind of scale, depth and dynamic impact that transforms a great two-channel system into a genuinely immersive listening experience.
Dual 8.25-Inch W-Cone Woofers
One of the biggest differences between the Sopra N°2 and N°3 is found at the bottom of the cabinet.
The Sopra N°3 uses two 8.25-inch W-cone woofers, giving it considerably greater surface area and bass capability.
Focal's W-cone sandwich construction combines low mass, rigidity and damping to allow the woofers to produce substantial output while maintaining control and definition.
The Sopra N°3 reaches down to 33Hz ±3dB and 26Hz at -6dB.
But the story isn't simply how low it goes.
It's how it gets there.
The N°3 is designed to deliver bass with depth, impact and articulation—providing the physical foundation of the music without sacrificing speed or overwhelming the midrange.
Pure Beryllium Tweeter with IHL
At the opposite end of the frequency range is Focal's 1-inch pure Beryllium inverted-dome tweeter.
Beryllium offers an exceptional combination of rigidity and extremely low mass, allowing the diaphragm to react quickly to even the smallest changes in the musical signal.
Focal combines the Beryllium diaphragm with its IHL — Infinite Horn Loading — architecture, which manages the rear wave generated by the tweeter to help reduce distortion and improve definition.
The Sopra N°3 extends to 40kHz, delivering exceptional high-frequency detail and air while maintaining the refinement expected from a reference-level loudspeaker.
A Midrange Designed for Transparency
Between the dual woofers and Beryllium tweeter sits a 6.5-inch W-cone midrange driver incorporating two important Focal technologies: TMD suspension and NIC motor technology.
TMD — Tuned Mass Damper — is designed to control unwanted resonances within the driver's suspension.
NIC — Neutral Inductance Circuit — helps stabilize the magnetic field within the motor system.
Together, these technologies help reduce distortion through the critical midrange frequencies.
That's where the Sopra N°3 can become particularly impressive.
Voices sound natural. Instruments retain their individual textures. Small details remain intact even when the music becomes complex.
The goal isn't to emphasize detail.
It's to remove the things that obscure it.
Focus Time: Everything Aimed at You
The unusual profile of the Sopra N°3 serves an acoustic purpose.
Focal's Focus Time architecture angles the individual cabinet sections so the acoustic output of the drivers converges toward the listening position.
Instead of placing every driver on a conventional flat front baffle, the geometry helps optimize their time alignment.
It's one of the reasons the Sopra has such a distinctive appearance.
The cabinet is part industrial design and part acoustic architecture.
A Cabinet Designed to Stay Quiet
The Sopra N°3's substantial enclosure uses Focal's Gamma Structure, engineered to minimize cabinet vibration and unwanted resonance.
The cabinet needs to remain as acoustically inert as possible while two 8.25-inch woofers are moving significant amounts of air.
Focal uses extensive internal reinforcement, substantial cabinet materials and carefully engineered construction to provide a stable foundation for the drivers.
The objective is simple:
Hear the loudspeaker drivers—not the cabinet.
Designed for Large Rooms
The Sopra N°3 needs space to show what it can do.
Focal recommends it for rooms approximately:
430–860 ft² (40–80m²)
That's an important consideration when choosing between the Sopra N°2 and Sopra N°3.
For a more moderately sized room, the N°2 can be an outstanding choice.
But when the room gets larger—or the listener wants greater bass authority, scale and dynamic impact—the Sopra N°3 begins to make a lot of sense.
This is where proper placement and setup become especially important.
Built in France
The Sopra N°3 is designed and manufactured in France, incorporating driver technologies developed by Focal at its Saint-Étienne facility.
From the W-cone drivers and Beryllium tweeter to the cabinet architecture and crossover, the Sopra N°3 reflects Focal's ability to engineer the loudspeaker as a complete system.
The finish and construction are equally impressive.
This is a loudspeaker intended to perform like a reference component while looking like a piece of modern furniture or sculpture within the room.

The Grid's Take on the Focal Sopra N°3
The Sopra N°3 is what happens when you love what the Sopra N°2 does but want more of it.
More scale.
More bass.
More dynamic authority.
And more ability to energize a large listening room.
The dual 8.25-inch woofers give the N°3 a physical presence that becomes immediately apparent with orchestral music, rock, electronic music and anything else capable of producing serious low-frequency energy.
But what makes the Sopra N°3 special isn't simply its ability to play big.
It's that it can maintain resolution, imaging and midrange transparency while doing it.
With 91.5dB sensitivity and a recommended amplifier range of 40 to 400 watts, there are also numerous ways to build an exceptional system around the N°3.
Naim is an obvious partner, but we can also pair the Sopra N°3 with reference electronics from McIntosh, Audio Research, Luxman, Burmester, Goldmund and other high-performance manufacturers.
At this level, though, choosing the electronics is only part of the equation. Room size, speaker placement and system setup matter tremendously.
At The Grid HiFi & Home Theater, we can help design the complete Sopra N°3 system around your room, listening preferences and existing equipment.
