Focal 1000 ICLCR5 Reference In-Ceiling Speaker

The Focal 1000 ICLCR5 takes architectural home theater to another level.

This isn't simply a ceiling speaker designed for surround or Atmos duty. The ICLCR5 is engineered to function as a front left, center, right, surround, or height-channel speaker, making it possible to build an extremely high-performance theater with the loudspeakers almost completely hidden from view.

The key is Focal's adjustable driver assembly.

Rather than firing straight down, the speaker can be aimed toward the listening position. Combine that with Focal W-cone drivers, a dedicated W-cone midrange, and pure Beryllium tweeter technology, and the 1000 ICLCR5 becomes a legitimate high-end loudspeaker that happens to live in the ceiling.

A True Architectural LCR Solution

Most in-ceiling speakers are designed primarily for distributed audio or effects channels.

The 1000 ICLCR5 is different.

Focal designed it so we can use the same loudspeaker architecture for the left, center, and right channels of a theater.

That gives us the ability to create a coherent front soundstage without placing traditional speakers around the television or projection screen.

For rooms where architecture, cabinetry, glass, artwork, or interior design makes visible speakers undesirable, that's a huge advantage.

Adjustable Driver Assembly

Placement is one of the biggest challenges with architectural audio.

A speaker may need to be installed in the ceiling, but that doesn't mean we want its sound firing straight down.

The 1000 ICLCR5 uses an adjustable turntable-style driver assembly that allows us to direct the sound toward the primary listening position.

That gives us much greater control over the relationship between the speaker, screen, and seating positions.

Properly designed, the sound can appear to come from the action on screen rather than obviously coming from a speaker mounted overhead.

Dedicated W-Cone Midrange

The 1000 ICLCR5 uses a dedicated 4-inch W-cone midrange driver.

That's particularly important when the speaker is being used for the center channel.

Dialogue lives primarily through the midrange, and giving those frequencies their own dedicated driver allows the speaker to reproduce voices with greater clarity while the other drivers handle the lower frequencies.

For movies, television, concerts, and multichannel music, that separation can make a substantial difference.

Focal W-Cone Technology

The 1000 ICLCR5 uses Focal's W-cone technology for its midrange and bass reproduction.

The W cone is a sandwich construction consisting of two layers of glass surrounding a structural foam core.

This allows Focal to carefully control the three characteristics that matter most in a loudspeaker diaphragm:

• Lightness
• Rigidity
• Damping

The result is excellent transient response, low distortion, and highly controlled reproduction of music and movie soundtracks.

This is the same fundamental cone technology Focal uses throughout its higher-end loudspeaker families.

Pure Beryllium Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by Focal's pure Beryllium inverted-dome tweeter.

Beryllium combines extremely low mass with exceptional rigidity, allowing the tweeter to reproduce fine high-frequency information with speed and precision.

The tweeter extends all the way to 40kHz, helping the ICLCR5 reproduce subtle spatial information, ambience, and transient detail.

Both the tweeter and midrange levels are adjustable, giving us another way to fine-tune the speaker for its location and the acoustics of the room.

Left, Center, Right, Surround or Height

One of the strongest features of the 1000 ICLCR5 is its flexibility.

The same speaker can be used as:

• Surround
• Rear Surround
• Dolby Atmos Height Channel

That gives us enormous flexibility when designing a room.

We can use ICLCR5s across the entire theater or combine them with other Focal 1000 Series architectural speakers depending on the room, channel location, and performance requirements.

A Completely Hidden High-End Theater

The 1000 ICLCR5 opens the door to a very different type of private cinema.

Instead of designing the room around visible speakers, we can design the audio system into the architecture.

The front speakers can disappear.

The surrounds can disappear.

The Atmos channels can disappear.

Add properly integrated architectural subwoofers and even much of the bass system can become part of the room.

What remains is the screen, the room, and the experience.

That's exactly what high-end custom integration should accomplish.

Serious Output and Dynamics

With 91dB sensitivity and recommended amplifier power of 50 to 180 watts, the 1000 ICLCR5 is designed for much more than background listening.

Its frequency response extends from 53Hz to 40kHz, with useful low-frequency extension reaching 43Hz.

In a theater, we'll typically integrate it with properly selected subwoofers and bass management through the processor.

That allows the ICLCR5 to concentrate on the frequencies it reproduces best while dedicated subwoofers handle the lowest bass and LFE information.

Focal + Naim Custom Integration

As a Focal Powered by Naim store, The Grid can design the electronics around the architectural system as well.

Focal recommends its Naim CI Series electronics with the 1000 Series, providing dedicated streaming and multi-channel amplification solutions for custom installations.

For home theater applications, Focal also recommends the Astral 16 AV processor/amplifier platform.

Depending on the size and performance level of the theater, we can also build the system around dedicated high-end processing and amplification.

Easy Quick Install

Focal's EQI — Easy Quick Install — system is designed to simplify professional installation and reduce installation time.

The 1000 ICLCR5 includes a square magnetic grille that can be painted to match the ceiling.

Black and white felt are also included so the appearance behind the grille can be matched to the installation.

Once everything is installed and painted, the speaker becomes extremely discreet.
