The Ortofon MC A Mono is a reference-grade moving coil cartridge designed exclusively for mono vinyl recordings. Unlike a stereo cartridge playing a mono record, its true mono generator responds to horizontal groove movement without reproducing the unwanted vertical signal associated with surface noise, groove wear, and tracking imperfections.

At its heart is Ortofon’s specially polished Nude Replicant 100 diamond stylus, mounted on a lightweight, rigid boron cantilever. Aucurum coil wire, a neodymium magnet system, and Ortofon’s Field Stabilizing Element work together to reproduce the smallest musical details with precision.

The cartridge's titanium body is manufactured using Selective Laser Melting (SLM), a process that creates a rigid, internally damped structure. Ortofon’s patented Wide Range Damping system further controls resonance and supports accurate tracking.

What Makes the MC A Mono Special?

True mono reproduction

The MC A Mono generates a single signal rather than combining two independently generated stereo channels. By rejecting vertical groove movement, it can reduce the audible effects of dust, wear, and groove imperfections that would otherwise enter the playback signal.

A mono switch on a stereo amplifier combines channels electrically, but it cannot fully replicate the mechanical behavior of a dedicated true mono cartridge.

Replicant 100 and boron cantilever

The specially polished Replicant 100 diamond features an extended groove-contact profile. Combined with the boron cantilever, it is designed to provide accurate tracking and detailed reproduction across the frequency spectrum.

Titanium body and advanced damping

The Selective Laser Melting process builds the titanium cartridge body layer by layer, creating a rigid structure with controlled internal damping.

Ortofon’s Wide Range Damping system uses two rubber absorbers separated by a platinum disc to manage resonance across a broad frequency range.

Compatibility & Installation

The MC A Mono is intended for mono microgroove vinyl records. It is not a dedicated cartridge for wider-groove 78 RPM shellac discs.

Its 0.2 mV output requires a suitable low-output moving coil phono stage or a properly matched step-up transformer and phono preamplifier. Ortofon specifies a recommended load impedance greater than 10 ohms and a tracking force of 2.3 grams.
