Overview
AudioQuest Tornado Constant-Current (Source) — AC Power Cable
Designed specifically for the front end of a serious system. The AudioQuest Tornado Constant-Current (Source) power cable is optimized for components with a relatively constant or fixed current draw—such as DACs, music streamers, disc players, high-performance turntables, phono stages, preamplifiers, and other source electronics.
Tornado Source combines Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) conductors, ZERO-Tech, RF/ND-Tech, 72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS), 6% silver-plated RF-drain conductors, Direction-Controlled Conductors, and AudioQuest's premium Hanging-Silver AC connectors. It sits above Thunder and below Hurricane within AudioQuest's Storm Series.
Optimized for Constant-Current Source Components
AudioQuest doesn't believe every component should be fed by exactly the same power cable.
The Constant-Current (Source) version of Tornado is specifically designed for electronics whose current draw remains relatively stable during operation. That makes it particularly appropriate for:
- DACs and music streamers
- CD/SACD and disc players
- Preamplifiers
- Phono stages
- High-performance turntables
- Music servers
- Other source-level audio/video electronics
For power amplifiers, integrated amplifiers, powered subwoofers, and other equipment with rapidly changing current demands, AudioQuest offers the separate Tornado High (Variable) Current version.
100% Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ Conductors
Tornado Source uses Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+), AudioQuest's highest-grade copper conductor material.
PSC+ is manufactured to provide an exceptionally smooth and pure conductor surface, minimizing distortion associated with grain boundaries. And because Tornado uses solid conductors, there is no electrical strand-to-strand interaction—something AudioQuest identifies as a major source of transient intermodulation distortion in conventional stranded cables.
This is one of the major reasons Tornado represents a substantial step into AudioQuest's upper-tier Storm Series.
ZERO-Tech — Uncompressed Current Transfer
AudioQuest's ZERO-Tech addresses characteristic impedance in addition to conventional DC resistance.
The geometry eliminates the electrostatic field between the cable's high and low conductors, allowing linear RF Noise-Dissipation while providing zero characteristic impedance. The objective is to prevent the transient-current compression AudioQuest associates with conventional AC cables.
Even though Tornado Source is optimized for constant-current equipment, the power supply inside a DAC, preamplifier, or source component still benefits from a cable engineered to stay out of the way electrically.
RF/ND-Tech — Wide-Bandwidth Noise Dissipation
Radio-frequency noise has become increasingly important as our homes fill with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, switching power supplies, computers, networking equipment, and other RF-generating devices.
AudioQuest's RF/ND-Tech uses a common-mode phase-cancelling array together with proprietary dielectric materials and differential linear filtering to reduce induced RF noise across a wide bandwidth.
For sensitive source electronics, where extremely small audio signals are being converted, processed, or amplified, reducing this electrical noise is particularly important.
72V Dielectric-Bias System with RF Trap
Tornado incorporates AudioQuest's patented 72V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS).
DBS continuously creates an electrostatic field that polarizes the cable's insulation. AudioQuest says this improves the dielectric's behavior at high frequencies and reduces dielectric-related distortion.
Tornado's DBS system also incorporates an RF Trap derived from technology developed for AudioQuest's Niagara power products, further reducing induced radio-frequency noise.
6% Silver RF-Drain Conductors
Tornado Source uses solid 6% silver-plated copper RF-drain conductors.
Rather than using expensive silver everywhere simply for the sake of doing so, AudioQuest applies it specifically to the drain conductors where its conductivity helps dissipate RF noise away from sensitive circuitry.
This is a substantial step beyond the lightly silver-plated drain wires found in AudioQuest's more affordable power cables.
AudioQuest's Best AC Plugs
The connectors themselves receive the same level of attention as the cable.
Tornado uses AudioQuest's premium Hanging-Silver over Red Copper and Beryllium Copper AC plugs. AudioQuest designed these connectors to lower distortion while improving the dissipation of high-frequency noise at the critical interfaces between the wall, cable, and component.
This matters because a sophisticated conductor architecture can only do so much if the electrical connection at either end becomes the weak point.
Direction-Controlled Conductors
All internal Tornado conductors are Direction-Controlled.
Drawn metal has a non-symmetrical grain structure, and AudioQuest controls the resulting RF impedance variation so induced noise is drained away from the connected electronics rather than toward them.
Directionality is therefore part of AudioQuest's Noise-Dissipation architecture—not simply an installation preference.
C13 and C19 Options
For the U.S. and Canadian market, Tornado Constant-Current is available with:
C13 → 3-Prong Wall Plug — for conventional IEC-C13-equipped source components.
C19 → 3-Prong Wall Plug — for compatible components using the larger IEC-C19 connection.
This gives Tornado Source considerably more flexibility when matching it to premium source electronics and power products.
Available Lengths
Tornado Constant-Current (Source) is available in:
1m / 3 ft 3 in
2m / 6 ft 6 in
3m / 9 ft 10 in
AudioQuest also states that Tornado is made to order at its Irvine, California headquarters, with custom lengths and terminations available through authorized AudioQuest dealers.

Tornado Source vs. Thunder High Current
This is an important distinction for customers because Tornado isn't simply the more expensive version of Thunder.
Thunder High (Variable) Current is optimized for power amplifiers, integrated amplifiers, powered speakers, subwoofers, receivers, and power-conditioning products where current demand can change dramatically.
Tornado Constant-Current (Source) is optimized specifically for the more stable current requirements of source electronics such as DACs, preamplifiers, turntables, and disc players. Tornado also steps up to solid PSC+ conductors and AudioQuest's premium Hanging-Silver connectors.
That gives us a much better way to sell these on The Grid than simply presenting them as progressively more expensive power cords: choose the cable architecture according to what the component actually does.
The Grid HiFi
The AudioQuest Tornado Constant-Current (Source) is designed for the components where low-level information matters most. A high-end DAC, streamer, phono stage, or preamplifier doesn't necessarily need the same power architecture as a 1,000-watt amplifier—and AudioQuest specifically designs Tornado Source around that distinction.
At The Grid HiFi, we can match the correct AudioQuest Constant-Current or High/Variable-Current cable to each component rather than simply putting the same power cable throughout the system. From the wall outlet through PowerQuest or Niagara conditioning and ultimately to each source component and amplifier, the goal is to build the AC system as carefully as the audio system itself.
